Don't Ignore the Online Channel: Combating Cross-Channel Fraud at the Cause
By :
Erwin Roberts
The most recent threat to online banking accounts and online fraud detection involves fraudsters using a multi-step system that involves different interaction points with financial institutions.
Cyber-criminals commit this cross-channel fraud by first unauthorized logging-in to an account via the online channel to take valuable information such as account balances, check images, or signature blocks, in order to perform wire, check and other types of offline schemes that never get related to the original breach online.
Regrettably, the online channel's role in these scams is often missed. This is precisely what makes this kind of fraud so successful - and complicated to catch. Financial institutions only register the final transaction fraud, and can't account for the original encroachment, which often occurs in the online channel. Add this to the detail that consumers don't know it is happening, and the fraudsters have a great opportunity to continuously get away with this crime.
Case in point is what came about recently to a leading financial institution that serves tens of thousands of customers daily. Despite assertive efforts to protect its online environment, fraudsters pulled off a startling cross-channel fraud scheme.
Here's how the fraud scheme worked:
1. The fraudster phoned the institution's customer service number and, by social engineering practices, reset the online account password and contact phone number.
2. The fraudster got into the online account, discovered more about the customer's online activities, and downloaded check images having the customer's signature.
3. The fraudster then called on a different institution using the stolen information to open a brand new account in the victim's name.
4. A wire transfer was organized to empty the victimized account and credit the new account at institution #2. Because the names on the accounts were equivalent and the fraudster had supplied a phone number under his/her control and a valid signature, an offline verification of the transfer by phone, as a second means of identification, passed and was authorized.
5. The fraudster withdrew his loot little-by-little, visiting separate branches in a state separate than the victim's.
Legacy Fraud Detection Practices Blind to Online Activity
When fraudsters utilize schemes involving multiple interactions with different touch-points across an organization, they aren't caught for the reason that the precursor online channel violation is often overlooked.
Common industry routine registers the final fraud transaction as the breach point, and case forensics employ deficient resources to return insight that cannot discover the original breach to the online channel. When accessed only for inspection, the online channel records no "transaction" for detection. This is precisely what makes cross-channel fraud so effective - and so hard to catch. Moreover, as what kind of fraud is our earlier example to be classified. Is such a loss wire fraud, check fraud, or simply "online account fraud"?
A next-generation approach to online fraud detection and prevention is needed if we are to continue to inspire customer confidence in online banking security. According to Javelin Research's 2007 Identity Fraud Survey Report, it is an average of 60 days for consumers to even indentify that fraud has occurred. This leaves fraudsters with a ideal opportunity to carry out successful cross-channel fraud crimes if financial services providers don't take defensive steps to protect both their customers and their bottom line. New best practices and back-end technologies that focus on online behavior can better isolate and prevent cross-channel fraud at the source.
Modeling Individual Account Behavior Stops Fraud at Its Source
An evolving best practice of online fraud prevention is to employ predictive models of individual customer online conduct to detect when the "customer" logging in isn't who they say they are, even if they pass authentication. Beyond straightforward machine signature technology, user profiling technologies depend on trended analysis of behavior account by account. They start by accepting what "normal" behavior is for each individual customer - and admit that there is no single pattern of "normal" behavior to write an anti-fraud rule to.
Dynamic, model-based investigation of account activity "does the math" - collecting what by themselves may seem like frail indicators of fraud until a powerful pattern emerges of online fraud detection. Behavior that deviates from what is expected becomes suspicious - the more the deviation, the more meaningful the suspicion. This comprehensive analysis allows for more granular risk scoring and better connection with offline activity patterns. A spin-off of this behavioral analysis through transaction monitoring software, also provides a rich history of online activity that aids examination and forensics.
Using these techniques, organizations can identify the fraudster via the flags to online activity outside the customer's likely behavior. Deploying strong analytics at the source - the online channel - ensures that fraudsters' assaults are shut down before any damage is done.
So You Want to TIG Weld!
By :
mdtread
It is like a rising superstar in this day in which we live. The art of TIG welding has been around for some time but is becoming an ever popular application for welding.
It is drawing upon the curious side of someone already interested in the field of welding.
TIG welding is a very unique form of welding. When you begin to use the left and right hand simultaneously in any process there is more stress involved to the welder and this technique requires more agility than does the more common practices of welding.
When you embark upon a career in TIG welding there are normally pre-requisites that have already been achieved by the time you arrive in the TIG domain.
Stick welding is normally a foundation before a welder steps into the world of TIG.
Rarely does the TIG process stand alone. There are places that you find the MIG and TIG process alone but those areas do not entail the vast majority.
Some places you may see just the TIG would be the Aero-Space Industry, lightweight bicycles, hospital equipment, dairy production, etc.
For the most part, the TIG process will find you in the Petro-Chemical Industry,
Chemical Refining, and the Fossil Fuel Industry.
Power plants, refineries, chemical plants and the likes is actually the place that the biggest money is made as well as the pipeline; which used to be downhill stick only and reserved for the welder with the big head and the rig truck he worshipped as a god.
Things have come a long was needless to say.
The welder in general used to have an upper-hand in his craft but not so any more. Most people in these industries look at the welder in general as a cry baby and whiner who is always looking for the ideal conditions in which to perform his operation.
But! The TIG welder is someone that is still in high demand and carries some prestige connected to his ability to be ambidextrous.
The TIG hand can weld stick, MIG, TIG usually whether it is carbon or alloy metals.
The further the welder can move into the realm of the exotic, the more in demand he becomes. The more certifications he can obtain, the more in need he will find himself (or herself).
The bad part about the area of TIG welding that we are talking about at this stage is the different environments that go with this type of welding.
The already mentioned places that usually call for this type of welding are not the most pleasant places to work. These type of environments eventually take a toll upon the body of the individual.
It is not easy to sustain good optimal health in fume and particulate saturated environments. Toxins and poisons are present. Elevated structures with scaffolding enclosed by fire retardant blanket. Noise levels that can and most of the time due require hearing protection.
Come to think about it, the bike factory is becoming more appealing all the the time. LOL!
Actually, a good TIG hand that is respected in his trade can call the shots. He sizes up the fit on pipe and if it isn't correct he shoots it down, because once he starts welding on it he has taken the responsibility in saying I can make it happen.
A good TIG welder can make a bad fitter look good. Or take a bad fit and turn the fabricators heartburn into Rolaids to the rescue.
An older man that has become well versed in his trade is widely respected by his peers when he becomes known as the TIG daddy, the man, the khaki daddy, etc.
There are up and coming young men that are always following in the footsteps of the well accomplished mentor TIG welder.
TIG comes with a few essential items that must be recognized. Clean clothes every morning with starched shirts and a nice skull cap. A bandanna in the back pocket. A bandanna around the neck like a businessman would wear a tie to the office. Fairly new looking gloves that are not your run of the mill leather. TIG welding requires sensitivity in the fingertips and hands.
Most of the time a good TIG hand has cash in his wallet and is on top of his game. The problem we see with that in our economy is that he has to travel a bit more than he would like to keep that going.
The benefit of that is that he will always have a job because of his skills.
You see the TIG welder is selling his skill. He doesn't produce a product so to speak. His arsenal of tools contain his favorite hood or two, small hand tools that are used to accent his skill. Sharp tungsten stored in his tool bag or bucket. Files, die grinders, small wrenches, flapper wheels, emory cloth, filler rod, a coffee thermos (very important), extra gloves and lenses if needed, and possibly some small fit up wedges or flat head screwdrivers.
In our next article we will look at the actual components of his equipment for a further breakdown in lesson TIG 102. Until then, thanks for your time and take care!

Save Time and Money by Using an Online Proposal Company
Every business needs to present proposals to their customers in the hopes of winning their business. These presentations need to be compelling and convince the customer that your company is the clear choice for their business needs. Having the perfect proposal created that conveys your message to the client with impact can be a tricky thing to do if you don't have the right resource available to create the presentation. Many companies are turning to the web and having online documentation companies help them.
Your One-stop Shop for All of Your Proposal Needs
These online documentation shops can be a huge help in creating the perfect presentation for your clients. They normally employ a stable of graphic artist's, writers and programmers to help you convey your message in a variety of formats. They can help you create the presentation from scratch, or take your ideas and add the professional graphics touch to them to make them look even more polished.
Because these online firms do a good volume of work and have lower overhead than traditional businesses, the pricing for their services can be very reasonable. It is a great alternative for smaller firms as it allows you to contract with these companies for just the amount of work you need. Hiring an employee to do the same work would be much more expensive. Even larger companies can benefit by collaborating with one of these online firms for various projects. It allows the company to augment their staff and utilize the additional resources of these online firms to help complete projects early.
In addition to help with presentations, these online firms can help your company deliver complex proposals as well. They can create the proposal and any supporting documentation you need. If the proposal needs to be changed as the deal matures, they can generate a new proposal quickly for you to deliver to your client. Often times these proposals can be a multi-step process and having an online firm that you can contact quickly and will ensure you a quick turn-around on a proposal can make all the difference.
There may also be times where you are asked to bid on a project for a local or state government project and these proposals are very specific in their format. Or you may need to prepare a very complicated grant proposal. Having an online firm that has created and delivered these types of proposals successfully before is a real help. Trying to figure out the nuance of detail needed for these types of proposals can waste time you don't have. Using a professional online firm that has navigated these turbulent waters before is essential.
Also, creating a basic proposal won't always win you the business. Your proposal must also have a sales tone running through it subtly and having an online firm that has a record of accomplishment of creating a winning proposal can help you secure more business. They can also help bolster your proposals with supporting documents and diagrams to further impress your client. Having these proposals created by a team of professionals that presents your offer and your company in the best possible light can mean the difference between winning and losing a deal. When you consider your competition for a specific project, you really need to have the best possible proposal you can, the first time. Using a company that has won major deals before with large corporate clients provides you with the experience you need to best your competition.
Another area these online companies excel at is RFP research and documentation. Often times the RFP process is vague and you need to do some initial research for a project and ask some follow-up questions of the client. Many of these online firms have the experience to help guide you in the right direction for project clarification and will know the questions that need to be answered for you to proceed. Having an advisor through this process will help you deliver the perfect proposal for the RFP in the shortest amount of time and with less stress as well.
These online documentation firms can also handle your company's correspondence. This can be a simple solicitation response, or a more involved mail campaign for a product launch to targeted customers. These firms can handle any volume you may need and can also personalize the correspondence with your signature as if you actually signed the letter. The best thing is that you can be assured of a quick response for your needs. You can even send along the documents you want mailed electronically and they will print them out on your choice of stock including letterhead, personalize them with the customer's name, and mail them out. This can save you and your staff a lot of work and it is very economical.
Another area that these online documentation firms can help your company is large format documents like floor plans, schematics and blueprints. Most of these online firms can handle this type of preparation and printing and can deliver these to you in their finished form. Having the technology to accommodate these types of documents at your office can be very expensive and they are used very infrequently. Having a company you can use when the need arises for this type of documentation can save you a lot of budget and time.
Your company may also have to create product manuals or training materials from time-to-time. These can be sizeable and complex projects and having a firm that can help here is essential. These firms have the software and expertise to create these tools for you and can either create them from an outline, or take a completed draft and deliver a professional manual or course based on the information. Many times your customers judge your company on the quality of these materials so it is essential that they be as professional as possible. Having an online firm that has experience in creating this type of collateral is critical to presenting a professional corporate image to your clients.
