  • Your New Puppy Meets Your Older Dog  By : Jeannie Paterson
You have a new puppy coming into the family and you are in need of some new puppy advice. There is an older faithful dog that has been a long standing family member and they must be introduced. This is one of the dreaded steps of bringing your new puppy home. Your present dog will already have his territorial boundaries set in the home and in the yard. Not to mention the bonds and the protective tendencies your dog will have over the family members.
When introducing your new puppy into your home you are going to have a lot of time spent house training him and teaching him the behavior that is acceptable in your home. In addition to the time effort and love that will go in to the new puppy training you have to balance your time and affection with your dog. There will be an extra need for love and attention for your dog to keep the peace in the family. Peace between your new puppy and your older dog is the ultimate goal. Let's go over some helpful bits of wisdom to make this process less stressful for not only you but also for your new puppy and your other dog.
    1. It is very important that you allow your new puppy and your older dog to establish the pecking order. It is best for you to remain as uninvolved in this process as possible. Both your new puppy and the dog you had previously will read your body language and your tension levels. If you are scared or worried about this process they will know it and it will be more stressful. Your stress will stress your new puppy and especially your existing dog that is already in tune to your body language. (Assuming that the grown dog is not aggressive, these steps will be very helpful. If your grown dog is known to be aggressive it will be necessary to contact a professional who works with aggressive dogs that can walk you through the appropriate steps.) Put your older dog on a leash. This gives you a measure of control if your more mature dog gets over protective at their first meeting. If this happens, take your older dog away from your new puppy and start the process over. Remembering to stay calm and in control as they will look to you as the pack leader. Allow your new puppy and your older dog to sniff and investigate each other with as little intervention as possible. They will quickly establish the pecking order. Surprisingly, it will not always be the older dog. One of them will have a more prominent personality and that will be the one that will lead in the pecking order. I will be sharing more information on helping your dogs establishing the pecking order that you desire them to have in a later article.
    2. Learning the needs and the mode of communication of both your new puppy and your older dog is also important. Our dogs are a lot like people. You already know the current needs of your older dog but they may change slightly after you bring your new puppy into the family. As you learn the temperament and the personality of each dog, you can use this knowledge to understand how to meet their emotional needs. In meeting both your new puppy's needs and your older dog's emotional needs, will create less of a competitive atmosphere between your dogs. This will go a long way to make the adjustment period more peaceful. Before your new puppy and your older dog are introduced, take some time with your older dog to make him will feel his place in the family is more secure.
  • New Puppy's Ride Home  By : Jeannie Patterson
You have been impatiently waiting for the day that you can bring your new puppy home. That day is finally here and you can hardly wait to pick up your new little family member and start your new life together. Before this day arrives, you will find it very helpful to take a little time to prepare for your puppy's ride home. This is an exciting time for you but for your new puppy it is a completely new adventure. He is being taken away from everything that he has ever known and entering into a strange new world. Preparation on your part will lessen your puppy's stress and make the adventure more enjoyable for everyone involved.
It is safer for your puppy if he is in a crate on his trip home. This will keep him from wandering around the car. Your puppy wandering around the car could create several problems. One of them being that he could get on your lap and distract you while you are driving. He could also go to your feet and become a hazard possibly causing you to lose control of the car. This will also keep him from being thrown and possibly hurt if you were to become involved in an accident. Another good reason for having your puppy in a crate for his ride home is that the stress levels may cause your puppy to need to go potty. It is also likely that stress or simply the movement of the car may cause him to get nauseated and create a mess too. If he is in a crate it will keep any mess there may be confined and easier to clean up.
If you do not have a crate, you should check with your family and friends to see if anyone has one that you could borrow. If there is simply no crate available, get a box to keep you new puppy in for his ride home. If I were to use a box, I would take the time to put a plastic trash bag between the bottom of the box and the sheet or towel to prevent any messes from leaking through the box onto my car seat.
It is a good idea to have a sheet or a towel to put in the crate or box for your puppy's comfort. It will make your puppy feel like it has something to snuggle with and it will also make his feet more secure so that he doesn't slide inside the crate or box. I like to bring a towel or sheet that I don't mind throwing away. This will eliminates having to worry about getting the sheet or towel washed while I would rather be spending time helping my new puppy adjust to his new home.
If possible, it is a good idea to bring a family member or a friend along for the ride. This will provide one on one company for the puppy. It gives you the comfort of knowing that if your puppy is scared and whimpering there is someone there to try to comfort him. It will make it a safer situation because it will help you to not be distracted while driving.
Turning on some soft and smoothing tunes can also be comforting and soothing to your puppy. So grab a CD before you leave the house or find a good soothing radio station to have on for the ride home. It is also wise to take your time driving home. Taking it slow will minimize the chance of your puppy getting car sick.
If you are prepared for you puppy's ride home, all that's left for you to do is pick your puppy up and start enjoying the adventure with your new puppy.
  • How to Fix Bad Dog Teeth  By : Steve Weber
A dog's teeth are one of the most important aspects relating to his or her overall health. Unfortunately, many dog owners often neglect this extremely important aspect of owning their pet. Every dog owner has the responsibility of maintaining their dog's overall good dental health. Actually, the health of your dog's teeth can literally affect the overall life expectancy of your dog. Here's how that works:

Plaque build-up on your dog's teeth is very dangerous. Not only do dog owners find the plaque unsightly, it can lead to gum disease. The gum disease can often lead to bleeding gums, which then allow the bacteria within the plaque direct access to other parts of the dog's body, including important organs.

Once this bacteria reaches the other organs in the body, they release harmful toxins, which can be very dangerous, and sometimes even lethal to the dog. Fortunately, the build up of this plaque is very easy to control. Some vets offer a service, called scaling, which is very expensive. Many times, this cost can be $400 or more. Although it is very effective, the scaling process comes with many risks, as the dog needs to be put under general anesthetic to do the procedure. The mortality rate for dogs that undergo scaling is quite high by human standards.

The general anesthetic is far more dangerous to dogs than with humans. Most vets recommend this process to occur yearly. Although it is necessary to keep the plaque off, there are other methods which can be used to maintain your dog's dental health. The cost for healthy dog teeth does not have to involve this dangerous procedure at the vets office. There are natural products, which can be purchased and used at home to control the plaque. These toothpastes, gels and sprays are natural and often have zero side effects to the dog. The cost for those in cleaning dogs' teeth is quite low. Often times, the products themselves cost well under $30. Only the time required by the dog owner is necessary. Older pets especially are at risk to anesthesia. Please always consult with your vet about other procedures, which could be done instead of allowing your dog to under go anesthesia.
  • Cleaning Dog Teeth  By : Steve Weber
There are many reasons why cleaning your dog's teeth are important. One of the most obvious reasons for keeping your dog's teeth clean is the pearly white smile every dog owner

loves to see. However, there are plenty of other reasons why cleaning dog teeth is important.

Just like in humans, keeping dog teeth clean is important for health reasons. Tartar buildup on teeth can lead to infections. As the gums bleed, the bacteria in the mouth have direct

access to the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the bacteria can migrate to other parts of the body, including organs. Once they infect the various organs, their byproducts act

as poison to the organs. This can be very dangerous to dogs, causing illness and sometimes even death. Remember that with respect to tartar buildup on your dog's teeth, it is far

easier to prevent the buildup than it is to remove it once it occurs. Often times, vets are very concerned about the buildup of tartar and suggest a process called scaling in order to

    clean dog teeth.

Scaling involves general anesthetics. Dog owners should always remember that general anesthetics with dogs are far more dangerous than with humans. There is a high rate of

mortality associated with general anesthetics in dogs. Only under the most necessary conditions should general anesthetics be used. Always consult your vet and ask him specific

questions about this before allowing your dog to undergo the procedure. Once again, it's far easier to keep the tartar from building up than it is to remove it once it occurs. There are

many gels and toothpastes available on the market which aid in this process. It may be difficult at first to keep your dog on board with the idea of brushing his or her teeth, but with

some patience and good dog psychology, it is possible to have your dog cooperate and allow daily cleaning.

Once the tartar is removed, cleaning only three or four times per month is really all that is required to maintain healthy teeth. If the tartar buildup is severe, daily brushings, if not twice

daily brushings, may also be necessary for several months in order to remove the tartar. Remember also it's important to brush your dog's teeth at a time when food and water can be

removed for 30 minutes to an hour afterwards. The gel and toothpaste have a lingering effect for dissolving the tartar, and it's important to keep the dog's mouth and teeth in contact

with the gel for as long as possible. Cleaning your dog's teeth is not the most glamorous aspect of owning your dog, but it is very important for maintaining his or her overall health.
  • Dental Care For Dogs  By : Steve Weber
As in humans, proper dental care is very important for a dog's health. Although tartar build up on dog's teeth is unsightly, and can often cause bad breath in a dog, there are far more important issues to consider. Proper dental care for dogs involves removing plaque. The tartar build up on a dog's teeth can lead to gum infections, and the gum infections can then lead to infections of bacteria from the mouth, into the blood stream, which then attacks healthy organs.

This can be very dangerous for the dog, and sometimes can even result in death. Proper dental care in dogs is often taken care of by a vet. There's a process called scaling which the vet performs on the dog, while the dog is under general anesthesia. Although this process is highly effective, there are dangers associated with this. Many dogs are more susceptible to general anesthetics than humans are.

The mortality rate in dogs undergoing this procedure is significant. All dog owners should consult their vets about these issues. This is especially true in older dogs, where dental care is most needed. There are other alternatives, however, for insuring proper dental care for dogs than scaling. There are natural gels and toothpaste available, which are highly effective, in removing the plaque from dog's teeth. Although these are not quick fixes, they are very effective when used correctly.

Once the plaque is removed by these products, it is relatively easy to maintain proper dental care of dogs with only three or four cleanings per week, using the gel. Additionally these products are much more inexpensive than the scaling for insuring a dogs dental care. The procedure at the vet can cost $300 to $400 or more.

Also, there is a round of anti-biotics which is required after the procedure. In many cases, one of those expensive procedures would be enough to cover the entire lifetime cost of many of the natural products available to do the job yourself at home. Dental care of dogs should be an important consideration for all dog owners. It will ensure a long and healthy life for your dog.
  • How to Remove Tartar on Dogs Teeth  By : Steve Weber
Dog owners often realize there's a problem when their dog's teeth become unsightly with tartar build up. Although it is unsightly, there are other problems associated with tartar on dog's teeth, which are far more important to consider. Proper dog dental health requires that dog owners are aware of the dangers associated with severe tartar build up. There are two important reasons that make the plaque on dog's teeth a serious condition. First of all, the plaque acts as a breeding ground for bacteria. Secondly, the tartar is usually the precursor to gum disease. Once gum infections occur, there often can be bleeding of the gums. Since there is bleeding, that means there is direct access to the bloodstream. The bacteria that are present then have an easy way to enter the bloodstream and thus migrate to other organs of the body, causing infections there. This can be a very serious condition, causing illness and sometimes even death in some dogs.

There are several ways to clean tartar on dog's teeth. One of the most common ways is done at the vet, and this is called scaling. Scaling requires general anesthetic be applied to the dogs.

All dog owners should be aware how dangerous this procedure can be. The mortality rate of dogs undergoing general anesthesia is far higher than that in humans. The reasons are that dog's bodies are smaller and more susceptible to the anesthetic, and also there is less training and less safety pre cautioned enabled in the procedure on dogs.

There are other, safer, just as effective solutions for removing tartar on dogs teeth. However, there are all natural gels and sprays available, which will remove the tartar nearly 100% of the time. Although these are no quick fixes, they do get the job done.

If the tartar build up on dog's teeth is severe, it may take up to two months of daily cleaning to remove it. However, once removed, the tartar is easily controlled from that point on. Usually, only three or four cleanings per week are all that are required in order to maintain healthy dog teeth.
  • Bad Dog Teeth: Does Your Dog Suffer From Them?  By : Steve Weber
Every dog owner would like for his dog to have pearly white teeth. However, it's not just how your dog's teeth look that is important. Bad dog teeth can be a severe health hazard for your dog.

The causes of bad dog teeth are very unhealthy for dogs. The problem is the tartar buildup on their teeth aids in the reproduction of harmful bacteria. Often times, gum disease is associated with the tartar and the gums begin to bleed. When a dog has bleeding gums, the bacteria associated with the plaque then have direct access to the bloodstream.

Those bacteria can then enter the bloodstream and migrate to other parts of the body, including important organs. Once they infest those organs, their byproducts are often harmful to those organs. Severe disease and even death has been associated with such infections. Veterinarians are often very concerned about this issue. They often suggest a process called scaling in order to remove the tartar from dogs' teeth.

The scaling process, however, includes general anesthetic. Dogs that undergo general anesthesia are more vulnerable to death than humans. In fact, some studies show that the death rate for anesthesia in dogs is often 10 to 20 times higher than with humans. The reason for this is that smaller-bodied animals are more vulnerable to anesthesia, and also there is less training and less safety precautions required when giving dogs general anesthetics than humans.

Even though the scaling procedure is very effective, dog owners should always seek out advice from their vets for other methods of cleaning their dog's teeth. There are natural products such as dog toothpaste, sprays, and other gels which can be used to dissolve the plaque in a dog's mouth.

They are not quick-fixes, but when used regularly, they will maintain good K-9 dental health. These products are very inexpensive compared to the scaling process, which can often cost many hundreds of dollars. Cleaning your puppy's teeth is a very important aspect for dog ownership. It is much easier to train a puppy to accept regular teeth cleanings. This will result in a life-long health dental hygiene without the dog suffering from bad dog teeth.
  • Syn-flex Glucosamine for Older Dogs  By : Steve Weber
There is something very peaceful about having old dogs around. We have two dogs right now who are fourteen. Red is a large Irish Setter and Katie is a small mixed breed. Both dogs have arthritis and both take Syn-flex liquid glucosamine to help keep their joints as healthy as possible.

There is no cure for arthritis, but Synflex glucosamine helps the joints stay as lubricated as possible. Red, because he is a large dog, has more problems than Katie who is a small dog. Large dogs simply have more joint issues when they are older because of the extra weight they have to carry.

Our vet said to give them glucosamine instead of some of the other prescription drugs which can be dangerous. We found the liquid form of glucosamine to be very effective. Synflex has a full 1500mg of glucosamine in each dose. Before we found it, we had been using pills. However, it took 3 or 4 pills to equal the same dosage the liquid glucosamine offers. Plus, it was much easier to give them. We simply pour the product over their food at meal time.

Besides giving them the Synflex liquid, we also try to make sure their weight is kept down. It is better for them to be on the "skinny" side than to have to carry any extra weight at all. We also make sure they get plenty of walking exercise. With Katie we have to be careful not to let her get too excited and play too hard. Too often she thinks she is still a puppy and ends up hurting her leg and then limps for a few days.

Also, make sure your old dogs have a warm place to sleep. Cold is very hard on old bodies - whether human or canine. We have dog beds and rugs inside and out that both dogs use to sleep many hours each day. Don't worry about your old dog sleeping a lot; it is normal. I would guess that our old dogs spend 16 to 18 hours a day sleeping.

And one more thing, as your old dog ages, his or her teeth are not as good. The dry food they used to love to chew is now better for them if water is poured over it to soften it. We also buy some "high priced" canned food to mix in with their food too. They really appreciate that!

Keep your old dogs warm, give them a glucosamine supplement like Synflex, insure they get good exercise, keep their weight down, and give them plenty of hugs!

Steve Weber, an avid dog lover, has tips and advice on his website for caring for older dogs and offers more information about using Synflex liquid glucosamine for insuring healthy joints.S
  • Synflex Liquid Glucosamine for Dogs Suffering From Arthritis Problems  By : Steve Weber
Imagine a life free from the pains brought by arthritis. If this is hard to imagine right now, you just might need SynFlex. It is a type of liquid glucosamine which answers all the problems caused by osteoarthritis and the inflammation of joints. SynFlex helps ease and relieve these conditions caused by the lack of liquid glucosamine, a naturally occurring substance in the body which decreases as one ages. The decrease of liquid glucosamine in the system may lead to more painful arthritis symptoms.

The decrease of liquid glucosamine may be supplemented with SynFlex, which helps replenish a person's supply of this important ingredient and consequently reduces joint pains and inflammation and starts the repairing and rebuilding of worn out cartilage.

SynFlex is not just for humans, but is also recommended by veterinarians to use for cats, dogs, and other household pets that suffer from osteoarthritis or hip dysplasia.

Synflex takes effect almost immediately after ingesting because it is in liquid form which is more easily absorbed by the body than its tablet or capsule counterparts. SynFlex is also easier to serve to pets. One does not need to resort to tricking one's pet into taking a pill; instead one may simply pour SynFlex over their food. To further mask the strange liquid on their food, beef flavorings, which make SynFlex barely noticeable to dogs, are also available to make the dosing process easier for the pet owner.

With SynFlex's no questions asked money back guarantee, you may rest assured that it will do its job effectively and ease the pain brought by osteoarthritis.

Liquid glucosamine is a type of amino acid naturally found in shells of seashells that are found mainly in Asia. It is the ingredient of cartilages, which, when lacking in the body, will lead your joints to suffer and make you feel extreme pain, until of course, you take SynFlex.

SynFlex does not only have liquid glucosamine, it also boasts of several ingredients that work together to increase the effectiveness of the product in providing quick relief from arthritis. Unlike many prescription drugs that relieve arthritic pain, SynFlex does not cause any harmful side effects because it is made form naturally occurring liquid glucosamine.

Quite importantly, SynFlex also makes it easy and convenient for pet owners to travel with pets that suffer from osteoarthritis because, unlike other products that offer relief from arthritic pain, SynFlex does not require refrigeration.

There is no other product in the market today that can compete with the quality of SynFlex, although many products might seem similar. It has been clinically proven to relieve arthritis and joint pains, and is the top selling liquid glucosamine product today.

A quick search on Yahoo or Google will give you a glimpse at a lot of disturbing stories of pets dying or acquiring serious illnesses because the harmful effects of prescription drugs. Thus, a natural supplement like SynFlex should prove to be a welcome replacement for prescription drugs.
  • Starting a Tropical Freshwater Fish Aquarium With Success  By : Charles Myers
Some hobbies need almost nothing to start and not much more to continue, like for example Origami. What do you need? You and paper, that's about it. But when you're starting a tropical freshwater fish aquarium you do need a tank, fish, accessories, and, most importantly, research prior to starting.

If you think you can start a freshwater fish aquarium by chucking some water into a tank with a few fish and a filter thingy then think again 'cos that ain't how it's done folks.

What size tank will you get? Will it fit into the available space in your house? What do you do to the water before fish can live in it? Can you get a mixture of fish species or will some eat each other? Can you use real plants or will the fish eat those as well? How do you treat algae before it treats the fish?

You really need to research the subject before doing absolutely anything, this is crucial as without it you will certainly fail after a very short time. If you think the word "research" sounds a bit heavy then it's time for a re-think. Research is simply reading up on a subject, and in the case of fish aquariums it's really interesting, you'll be amazed at the information out there. • You Should Know This Before Building a Chicken Coop  By : Daniel Smith
First of all, the most important thing is the amount of chickens you want to rise. If you only want two or three then a small size coop should do you fine, but on the other hand if you want eight or more then you will need a fairly large coop. The recommend space allowance per chicken in a chicken coop is 4.5 square foot per chicken, but obviously the more the better. Make sure you consider this and decide before you buy any chicken coop plans or materials, since if you change you mind at a later date it is only going to cost you more.

Another vital fact is temperature, if it is very low, your chickens are likely to be unhealthy and egg output will be very low. If you live in hot areas then you will need to supply some form of ventilation for your chickens also if you live in a area where you get a lot of rain then your chicken house will need to be waterproofed. As you know, the temperature at night is lower than during the day, the solution of this problem is heat lamps, however, as mentioned above it is not so important if you live in how areas. The wind can also make chickens unhappy so make sure they have somewhere they can go to get shelter from it. All materials required for ventilation, heat and light could be easily bought in a local shop and they are very cheap.

Do not forget you think about your feeding system, chickens love leftovers but also you can feed them a already prepared chicken feed which contains everything they need in there diet. Withous a proper feeding system, cleaning a chicken coop becomes a nightmare especially if you keep more than 10 chickens. I recommend you to put 1 feeder per 5 chickens, from my experience it is more than enough for your chickens.

Finally, you learnt these important aspects of building chicken coops. I hope you found this article useful. In case you want to know where to get chicken coop plans, visit the link below for more information.

  • Allergies In Dogs  By : Ras Reed
Allergies in dogs is one of the many problems that dog owners or admirers hardly understand. They usually suppose that it is a temporary problem that will soon disappear. Actually, it is not temporary and if you don't take action right away, the problem may become worse. This piece of writing is written to help you understand this problem and what you can do to solve it. But before we go on, you need to be informed that there are different types of allergens and triggers. Therefore, the solution should be tailored towards the kind pf problem your dog is suffering from. It is really indispensable for you to see your veterinary doctor immediately if you cannot handle the problem based on what you are going to learn from this piece of writing.

One of the numerous foundations of allergies in dogs is fleas. Fleas can make the life of your pets miserable. You can tell if your dog is having fleas when there is continuous scratching, chewing and shaking of the head as well as pawing at the ears. There are countless means to get rid of the fleas. You can bath the dog properly. If she has long hair, try and cut it short so that you will be able to see any flea on her body. In addition, make certain that her beddings is well washed in hot water so that all the eggs of the fleas can be got rid of.

Another thing that can induce the problem for your dog is the type of food you give her. Food allergies such as beef, dairy products, soy and corn to mention a few can make your dog behave abnormally. Symptoms to watch out for are skin infections, ear infections, and repeated bowel movements in a day. Once you notice these symptoms, it is advisable that you take her to your vet at once. Let your vet prescribe another kind of food that will not trigger the problem again.

On a last note, a filthy environment can also lead to the problem. Therefore, it is really significant for you to have a clean home and make certain that the place where your dog is sleeping is very clean. Make certain that she stays away from filthy environment.
  • Health and Dogs  By : John Shelton
Housing pets, fleas are a common thing these days. Sooner or later your petswill become infested with them; despite the millions of dollars Americans spend annually on various products to contain this annoying flea. If your pet plays outdoors then they probably have them. You can believe that these fleas can hastily take over what ever room or yard they live in. because they're hosts to the worms and eggs they can create serious health problems with your pets including tapeworms, hair loss, and dermatitis. Fleas may even carry bacteria that are transmittable to humans. But you can keep fleas at bay or prevent them just by using some precautionary methods

Most people have a licensed lawn care company that treats the lawn on a quartly basis. The pest servicecompanies post a sign not to let dogs or cats out on the lawn for several hours unless there is a good rain. The sign says that lawn chemicals can cause cancer in dogs.
Exposures to herbicides that contain dioxin have been shown to increase the risk of lymphoma in dogs, although this finding is considered somewhat controversial. The chance is small but can be significant. Some say that there is an increased risk for dogs if they live near a golf course where herbicidal products are used extensively.
Dogs do not always just walk on treated grass, but that they also roll around and play on the grass and sometimes eat anything they might find there. After all of this, dogs like to lick may do some massive licking of the feet and fur coat, by doing this, any toxic substances are easily swallowed. As far as we know there has been no studies done on the amount of the herbicide and the increase incidence of cancer. You want to be protected, Ask for a label and msds and follow the lawn care company's recommendations.

    Be precautionary

Use a product like frontline as a preventive method to keep the fleasoff from reproducing. Most of the treatment like frontline has a 30 day action period. If you're going to do this it would be to your benefit to use it at the beginning of warm weather.
Frontline is a topical treatment applied between the shoulders of the pet. It will stop the younger fleas from developing into a full adult flea. You could also use pills and have the same results and they are safe to use.

Get rid of them as fast as you find them
No matter how often you try you can still get fleas. If you notice a lot of scratching check out your pet and see if you spot any fleas. One way is using a flea comb or look in the hair by separating it with your thumbs. Look for black specks, specs of dried blood and or the flea it self.

Take some proactive steps and ask your vet for workable solutions. Vacuum a lot and the bag out of the house by disposing of it and you can be very victorious.
  • Do Not Get a Purebred. Adopt Instead.  By : Jacob King
Making the choice to get a new pet is an exciting step for a family. The family must choose what kind of animal that they desire to get, what specific variety, and the general size. The family may have already narrowed down their name choices for their new pet, chosen where its bed will be and bought some pet toys. All that's remaining is acquiring the new pet and bringing it home. For far too many people, this step will involve a trip down to a breeder or pet shop for a purebred cat or dog, overlooking the fact that our animal pounds are filled beyond capacity with fantastic pets that just need a little love and a chance to finally find a wanting home.

There are several things you may want to consider before purchasing a new pure bred puppy or kitten. Will you be pampering the new animal for pet shows? Would you want your new pet to breed a litter? If the answer to both of the questions was "no", then you might want to give a second thought to dropping such an exuberant sum of cash on a new pet. Go down to the neighborhood animal shelter and take a look around. Meet with the staff of the shelter, and let them know exactly what you are seeking. If the precise animal you would like to find is not available, and you honestly don't connect with any of the available pets in need of a home, you should leave your contact info with the staff of the shelter and request that they inform you if the right pet becomes available.

You'll have to fill out an application and give a small fee just after you have made your decision on which new pet you want to take home to your family. Some interview with the adopting family in order to ensure that the new pet and the adopting family are a healthy match for each other. On occasion, there may also be an in-house interview as well, to check out the stability of the environment that the new pet will dwell in, and also to be sure that there's adequate room for him. Quite a few animal pounds now require an off-site interview with a local pet dr who fill out a letter of recommendation for the prospective adoptive family in order to confirm with the animal shelter staff that necessary health care will be maintained on a routine basis

The fun that your brand new friend will create for your home is completely worth the conventions and applications. Plus, you'll feel good about being the provider of a home for an animal that desperately needed it.
  • Dog Collars And Leashes - Obedience Training Requirements  By : Kashi
Before your dog can become the top companion both of you desire you need to undertake some basic obedience training. In most cases this will require the use of dog collars and leashes. Leash training is especially important for younger dogs. Most dog trainers recommend a lead for training dogs of all ages.

Dog leashes and collars help you train your dog to stay close and together they act as a safety device to keep your dog from running into traffic. They will also stop him from chasing other animals or lunging at people. Dog collars and leashes help minimize your liability and are mandated by law in some areas.

Two things must be kept in mind when choosing your dog leash. First is the size of your dog. Your puppy may not be big now but you need to consider the adult size of your dog and size your lead accordingly. This may require that you buy several different leads to accommodate the growth of your dog.

Also keep in mind the type of area where you plan to train and exercise your dog. If there is little traffic, such as in the suburbs, a longer lead may be appropriate. A shorter leash is a must when the area is crowded and confused. A long leash may permit your dog to wander so far that you are not in control and he is not safe. This is one reason some people opt for a reel type lead which does a fair job in both types of areas.

Leashes by themselves are not much good unless they connect with a proper type of collar for your dog. There is a large variety of dog collars to choose from. The main types are prong collars, electronic shock or scent collars, choke collars, front leading collars such as the Gentle Leader, harnesses and plain leather or fabric collars.

Shock collars, which used to be used quite often, are being phased out by the newer, more humane methods of discouraging unwanted behavior in your pet. Some of the newer vapor, scent, and forward leading leashes are more humane and can do the job quite well.

Choosing a collar or leash for your dog should not be done casually. The breed of your dog, its size and your goals for training must all be considered when selecting the proper dog collars and leashes. A different type, as well as size, may be required in training to alter inappropriate behavior of a large breed than one used for small breed obedience training. The heavy necks of most large breeds protect them fairly well from injury from prong collars and choke collars. Greyhounds on the other handBut greyhounds are easily injured by such collars. And they should never be used on small and toy breeds.
